Govt says statement shows link between al-Qaeda and Iraq
The federal government has seized on OSAMA BIN LADEN'S statement of solidarity withIraq as evidence of a link between the al-Qaeda terrorist group and Iraqi President SADDAMHUSSEIN.
Australian intelligence officers believe the statement -- purported to be from BINLADEN -- is genuine.
It's been broadcast by the al-Jazeera television network, with the Australian governmentsaying it points to a defacto alliance between BIN LADEN and his al-Qaeda network, andSADDAM.
Foreign Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER says it's heightened fears that weapons of mass destructioncould fall into terrorists' hands.
Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD, who's been in New York for high-level talks on Iraq, saysthe statement's evidence of an association between al-Qaeda and Iraq.
In the message, BIN LADEN urges Iraqis to carry out suicide attacks against Americansand rise up against any US attack.
