SA: Detainee has sunburn after threatening to jump fence
ADELAIDE, Dec 12 AAP - An Afghani man has been hospitalised for sunburn and dehydrationafter he climbed a razor wire fence at the Woomera detention centre and threatened tojump.
An Immigration Department spokeswoman said the man, known as Mahira, suffered no otherinjuries but would remain in hospital possibly until tomorrow.
"He suffered some sunburn and was quite dehydrated," the spokeswoman said.
Mahira climbed the razor wire fence yesterday after being told his asylum applicationwas rejected on character grounds.
After threatening to jump, he later moved to another fence and remained there untildetention centre staff successfully negotiated with him to come down last night.
The incident sparked another inside the centre, with about 40 detainees throwing rocksat a staff building and breaking into an officer's station.
The department said no-one was injured in the rock-throwing incident.
