QLD: New UQ research station on Moreton Bay
BRISBANE, Aug 17 AAP - A new research station on Moreton Bay off Brisbane would improve
the lot of those studying one of Australia's most important marine resources, the University
of Queensland (UQ) said today.
UQ marine studies associate professor Jack Greenwood said it would provide high quality
facilities for local and international researchers studying what UQ botany department
professor Bill Dennison said was a unique and complex system supporting healthy dugong, other
marine life, recreation and commercial activities.
The University of Queensland has maintained a research facility on North Stradbroke island
since 1959.
Dr Greenwood said the new station on North Stradbroke Island would be an important part of
the University's marine facilities, along with other stations at Low Isles and Heron Island.
The station has been funded by the Port of Brisbane, sandminer Consolidated Rutile Limited,
the Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs and internal university funds.
